Emergency Supplies Checklist:

The first 72 hours of a major disaster are critical, as the conveniences that we depend upon (electricity, gas, water and telephones) may not be available. Our police and fire departments will be kept busy responding to more serious problems, so we need to be as self-sufficient as possible. Stocking up now on emergency supplies can add to your safety and comfort during an earthquake or other disasters. Store enough of the following supplies for at least 72 hours:

Essentials 

  • Water – 1 gallon per person per day
  • Water purification tablets   
  • First aid kit 
  • First aid book  
  • Food
  • Can opener (non-electric)
  • Blankets and sleeping bags
  • Portable radio with batteries
  • Essential medications
  • Extra pair of eyeglasses
  • Extra set of house and car keys
  • Fire extinguisher (ABC type)
  • Cash (paper and coins)  
  • Baby supplies (formula, bottle, soap and powder, disposable diapers and wipes, blankets and clothing, food and juice)  
  • Pet items (food, water, leash or carrier)

Sanitation Supplies

  • Tarp
  • Large trash can and trash bags
  • Bar soap and liquid detergent
  • Shampoo
  • Toothpaste, toothbrush and floss
  • Toilet paper
  • Household bleach
  • Feminine hygiene items

 

Safety and Comfort
  • Sturdy shoes
  • Heavy gloves for clearing debris
  • Candles and waterproof matches
  • Light sticks and flashlight with batteries
  • Change of clothing and a rain poncho
  • Knife or razor blades
  • Whistle
  • Tent
  • Paper, envelopes, pens, markers and stamps

Cooking

  • Utensils
  • Dishes, bowls and cups
  • Paper towels and rags
  • Heavy-duty aluminum foil
  • Camping stove for outdoor cooking (before lighting a fire, ensure there are no gas leaks; never use charcoal indoors)

Tools and Other Items

  • Axe, shovel and broom
  • Gas shut-off tool or adjustable wrench
  • Tool kit including screwdriver, pliers and hammer
  • Coil of 1/2” rope and bungee cords
  • Duct tape, staple gun and sheeting for window  replacement
  • City map
